Image Descriptions
The cover image from Issue 67
A black and white picture of a soup kitchen. The camera looks down a long table from its end. All the people at the table sit with their heads downwards, or with their heads in their hands, leaning on the table. Everyone looks completely fed up, and there is a general air of despair.
The infamous “Shag Pile” cartoon
This is a black and white cartoon. The majority of the picture is taken up with a large, diagonally sloping, square label with “Heavily Censored Cartoon” written on it. Peeking out at the bottom of this label can just be seen a bed. A head and various arms and legs stick out from behind all the edges of the label, along with the following bits of speech: “AAH!”, “WOW!”, “OH! YES!”; and a sound: “CREAK!”. The impression is given that there are a lot of people on top of the bed, and that the label is just managing to cover up what they are doing!
“Fortress Europe” cartoon
This is a black and white cartoon. A group of refugees of different nationalities stand outside a door to a large fortress with towers and battlements which dominates the picture. The door has a big sign on top of it, labelled “TRADESPERSONS”. A head peers cautiously around the door from the inside of the fortress. On the side of the fortress is a large flag, labelled “Fortress Europe”, and there are also large signs reading: “NO WIVES!”, “NO CHILDREN!” and “NO RIFF RAFF!”. Several European flags fly from the top of the fortress, and two people can be seen looking over the top of the battlements — one appears to be holding a spear.
“Cartoon about writing hymns”
This is a black and white cartoon. A man, holding a guitar as if playing it, stands talking to a woman who is on the left of the picture. The caption at the bottom of the cartoon reads: “Writing hymns is a lot harder than I thought! I can't think of anything that rhymes with ‘Hallelujah’ except ‘glad I knew ya’ and ‘we'll tatoo ya’!”
“Cartoon about Adam naming the animals”
This is a black and white cartoon. Adam stands at the right of the picture with a quill behind his right ear. He is holding a clipboard, on which is a piece of paper with “Animal Names” at the top, and an illegible list of names below it. Adam is standing at the head of what appears to be a queue of animals who have yet to be named. We can see an anteater at the head of the queue, and a rabbit behind it. The caption at the bottom of the cartoon reads: “After just struggling to pick names for the platypus, the auk, the rhinoceros, and the gibbon, Adam was not in the mood to waste much time on this ‘eater of ants’”.
“Cartoon of St Peter with his head stuck through the gates of Heaven”
This is a black and white cartoon. In the centre of the picture is a large gate with an arch above it. Fences go from either side of the gate to the left and right edges of the picture. Above the gate are small fluffy clouds, and the gate itself appears to be upon a cloud. These are the gates of heaven. An angel with a halo, assumedly St Peter, sits in great embarassmentwith his head between the bars of the gate. He is clutching the bars either side of his head and is obviously stuck! At the right of the picture, two jolly looking firemen stand laughing at St Peter, they carry a saw and a file.
