Are Christians Arrogant?
ponders the way, the truth and the life
Is it true that all roads lead to God? Can you be a Muslim, Jew, Christian (in which class I include Catholics, since the last time I looked they weren't a separate religion), Hindu etc. and still get to heaven?
Well, this is Christis (where controversy reigns supreme) so it's hardly likely that I'm going to say yes. Before people who should know better start flaming me it must be said that there is no devout Muslim or devout Jew who would say that their beliefs aren't the ‘truth’, so this isn’t just another case of arrogant Christians judging everyone else.
Whether or not you believe me when I say that Christianity is the only faith which gets you to heaven it is important to realise why Christians make such a claim.
The basic doctrine comes from John's gospel, Chapter fourteen and verse six (page 55 if you have a copy of “Breakthrough”).
Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”
Christians, by definition, are followers of Jesus Christ. If we follow Christ and believe that the gospels are an accurate reflection of what Jesus said and did, then we have no choice but to accept the words of Jesus. This is NOT arrogance or being offensive. In fact it would be offensive to a Christian to say that this area of their belief is wrong (just like it would be if you criticised the beliefs of a Muslim or a Jew etc.)
If Jesus had said “Most people come to the Father through me and the rest by other means” then my views would be different.
The point of writing this (I re-iterate) was to make it clear that to call a Christian arrogant because of his or her beliefs is just as offensive as many other people find Christians expressing their views. (Another action the Bible tells us to undertake).
